Scars of Mt. Usu Walking Tour
Tour Overview
Explore the scars left by a volcanic eruption!
Mt. Usu is an active volcano that is located next to Lake Toya in the Shikotsu-Toya National Park. It last erupted in 2000 and the scars from that eruption can still be seen today.
This walking tour takes you to some of the most interesting remnants of this eruption. We will walk along the Nishiyama footpath for about 1.5 hours whilst stopping off along the way. Along the footpath you will see; volcanic craters, destroyed buildings, warped walls and upheaved roads. You will get to sense the awesome power of a volcanic eruption. After reaching the top of the path, we will have a break and a snack and then return back to the start.
We will then stop by a picturesque viewpoint of Lake Toya, which is a lovely photo spot. On the way back we will stop by an exhibition of Mt. Usu’s eruptions, then continue back to Noboribetsu.
